Cypress screen and solid hive bottoms
Our cypress bottom boards come assembled. And Ready to use.
The Cypress Screened Bottom Board has become very popular in the last decade as a way to help reduce the population of varroa mites. The screen on the bottom of the bottom board serves as a false floor that bees cannot get through, but debris and air can pass through easily. Our screened bottom boards also have a small rail underneath the screen that a corrugated IPM board can rest. This can be used to monitor mites and to close off the air flow in the hive for cooler weather.
The solid bottom boards provide more insulation during cold months. The solid bottom board differs from the screened bottom board in that the floor of the hive is a solid piece of wood. The solid wood keeps any drafts from coming into the hive and also makes it slightly easier for the beekeeper to control airflow inside the hive.
Both options work great and have been used for many decades.
